Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Central Water District need a new production well?
Well 14 will replace two of the District's aging wells that are more than 40 years old. In addition, based on preliminary water testing at this new site, improved water quality is expected.
What is the construction schedule?
The Well 14 Project is expected to take 6 - 8 months to complete. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- Well 14 construction will start on August 4, 2025.
- It will take approximately 4-5 weeks to drill the well. Continuous 24/7 well drilling or pump testing activities will occur only as necessary. All other construction activities will occur during extended-shift construction hours, between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- It will take approximately 1 week to trench and install underground piping across Freedom Boulevard. Traffic plans have been submitted to the County and are being finalized in order to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow.
- Following the drilling of the well, construction of the pump station will begin.
- Additional underground work (e.g., pulling PG&E lines, trenching, pipe installation, paving, etc.) will be performed at 7200 Freedom Boulevard through to the well site, to be completed within two months of the start of the underground work.
- Final review and approval of the new Well 14 by the State of California Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water must be performed before the well is placed online.
- Well 14 construction is anticipated to be completed during the first quarter of 2026.
Please note that contractors schedules can shift for a variety of reasons, so schedule updates will be provided on a regular basis.
Why is overnight construction activity required?
For example, overnight activity will be required during the well drilling stage. If the drilling process is paused overnight, there is danger of the borehole caving. A cave-in would require that the entire process start from the beginning, which would cause significant delays.
